What Is an EMT?

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a trained medical professional who responds to 911 calls, provides life-saving care, and transports patients to medical facilities. EMTs work in ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals and emergency rooms, and private medical transport companies.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I register? Registration opens on our website according to the dates above. When registration opens, navigate to our registration page, choose the course schedule you'd like (Day or Night), fill out your application info, and use a credit or debit card to pay the $150 non-refundable application fee. From there, you will be prompted to download the Welcome Letter which lists how to submit your registration documents and fees. Note: Registration does not guarantee a seat, and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis for those who complete all paperwork, fees, and requirements. Do not wait until the last minute. Completing your paperwork early is the only way to ensure your spot. If the class fills before you complete everything, your spot will be reserved for the following semester only.

How long is the EMT Program? The EMT Program is approximately 15 weeks long in the Fall/Spring and 12 weeks long in the Summer. The program is a 300‑hour certification course including lecture, lab, clinical, and ambulance hours.

What EMT class schedules are offered? The EMT Program is offered according to these schedules: • Day (Fall/Spring): Tuesday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–1:00 PM • Day (Summer): Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–1:00 PM • Night (Fall/Spring): Tuesday–Thursday, 6:00 PM–10:00 PM • Night (Summer): Monday–Thursday, 6:00 PM–10:00 PM 5 12-hour Fire Rescue Shifts and 2 10-hour Clinical Shifts will be scheduled on non-class days.

What is the cost of the EMT program? • Application Fee - $150 • Background Check/Drug Test/Health Tracker - $154 (paid to third-party) • AHA BLS CPR Course - $45 • Textbook Fee - $320 • Lab Fee - $1200 • Tuition - $1400 (available in 2 monthly payments) • Total Program Cost - $3269 Currently, TCMFI does not provide financial aid or accept FAFSA. However, scholarships from third-party organizations are accepted: https://www.tcmfi.com/scholarships We do offer a no-interest payment plan for tuition that splits the $1400 tuition into 2 payments of $700.

What are the admissions requirements? • Be at least 18 years of age • Provide a valid Florida Driver’s License • Be free of any felony convictions • Be, and remain, drug and substance-abuse free • Be physically able to meet EMS personnel demands as outlined in the “Functional Job Description” and “Americans with Disabilities Act” • Be financially able to cover the cost of the course • Be able to participate in clinical and ambulance rotations at various hours/days • Register and complete the Complio tracker ($156.99, not included in tuition) that includes: o 10-panel Drug Screening o Background Check • Provide a copy of a High School Diploma, G.E.D., College Transcript, or College Diploma • Provide and maintain health insurance valid through the duration of the program • Provide a signed Physician Clearance (physical form provided by the school) • Provide an up-to-date Immunization Record showing MMR, Hep B, Varicella, PPD/TB, and Flu vaccines (Declination waivers are available for the Hep B, Flu, and Covid vaccines) • Provide a current AHA BLS CPR card valid through the duration of the program. The BLS class is available for students at the school for $45, not included in tuition (EMT applicants must take a BLS course at our school) • Complete the 8-hour EMT Class Ready Online Prep Course (EMT Applicants Only, access code provided after registration) • Read, sign, and submit all applicable paperwork by the appropriate deadline • Attend an admissions appointment

How do I become a firefighter/paramedic? 1. Complete a state-approved EMT program, pass the NREMT EMT Exam, and apply for state licensure. 2. Complete a state-approved Fire Academy and pass the state test. 3. Complete a state-approved Paramedic program, pass the NREMT Paramedic Exam, and apply for state licensure. Once you are both certified as an EMT and Firefighter, you are eligible to apply to some firefighter/EMT positions.

What happens after I complete the EMT Program? Once you complete the EMT program, you’ll be fully prepared to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam. Passing this exam is required to become a certified EMT in Florida and many other states. Passing this exam is required to apply for your state EMT license, which officially allows you to practice as a licensed EMT.

What career opportunities are available after I get my EMT license? EMTs begin by working with ambulance services, fire departments, or hospital emergency departments. Many EMTs continue their education after EMT school and work towards positions such as Paramedic, Flight Medic, or Critical Care EMS.

What is the attendance policy? Regular attendance is required to stay on schedule and meet the National Standard curriculum and program hour requirements. For the EMT program, students are allowed a maximum of 2 absences per semester. Additional details can be found in the Program Catalog and Student Handbook.

What is the dress code policy? Students at TCMFI are expected to maintain a professional appearance at all times, as they represent both the school and the EMS profession. Students must wear the full, approved TCMFI uniform during all classes, labs, clinicals, and ride times without alterations. This includes program-issued uniform shirts, navy cargo pants, black closed-toe shoes, and approved outerwear. Appearance standards also apply to hair, grooming, jewelry, and tattoos to ensure a clean and professional look in all training environments. For specific requirements, please refer to the Dress Code Policy outlined in the Program Catalog and Student Handbook.

What is the Admission Day, Orientation, and Certification Day? The Admission Appointment Day is the class start date. This is when the students sign the enrollment agreement, review class policies, and receive their supplies and book. The next day the students come in is the Orientation, which is the start of their regular class schedule. The Certification Day is the last day of class.
